Year One Projects.

3 minute wonder.

I produced this work during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, which ultimately provided challenges in the production process. This was my first project as a student at York St John University and my first attempt at filming my own project. This work has been the stepping stones for me creating even more videos and projects and allowed me to practice basic editing and videography which are skills that I have been able to build upon.

York Promo.

I created this promo as a part of a wider portfolio task given to me at university. I was required to include certain types of shots, which allowed me to experiment with the camera and editing. This was also filmed during the height of the COVID-19 epidemic which made it difficult to film certain areas of York (e.g. the train station). However, I was able o get around some of these issues by filming the outsides of iconic buildings and structures in order to keep myself and others safe. This was a fun and simple task that had me thinking about film making in a different sense than I usually would, I was not required to tell a story but merely show off the city of York in an inviting and promotional way. I worked with a camera kit provided by the University which allowed me to get familiar with this equipment.

Sequence Task.

This task was also part of a portfolio that I was making for one of my modules. I was tasked with creating a sequence that demonstrated that someone was late for school. I had never attempted to make something like this before, specifically with making something that is particularly comedic. I really enjoyed experimenting with different shot types, editing techniques and sound in order to achieve my desired comedic effect.

True Crime Documentary.

This was made after the easing of COVID-19 restrictions in England which allowed me to travel across the country to film in different locations and obtain the desired GV's that I wanted to complete my documentary. In the future I would like to make more documentaries like this as it has become a passion for me. After obtaining excellent feedback and grades, this further highlighted to me that I have a passion for storytelling and in this case it was factual.

For this project I was required to make a documentary/film like no other that I had attempted to do before. This film is over three times the length as my previous documentary and this allowed me even more creative freedom than I had before. I attempted to make an ambitious true crime documentary told through an investigative lens. I narrated the piece and guided the viewer through my journey in uncovering the truth behind this awful crime. My mother helped tell the story and we collaborated together to make the best film possible. I gathered various GV's and travelled across the country to film in various locations. I also heavily researched different video editing techniques that I wished to implement in my film, I learned several new skills whilst using the editing software (Adobe PremierePro) which will be very useful in my years to come in the industry.

Overall, this project gave me a taste for documentary making and has informed my choices for my modules in my second years as I move forward with wanting to make more documentaries in the future.

The Ouse Opening Sequence.

I worked with a group of four other people to create four artefacts, with this being the opening to a TV series. We had total creative control over the story, characters and genre of the TV show as long as it was set in York. We decided to make a murder/mystery/suspense TV show that was centred around the disappearance of someone. I gathered several GVs of Durham, as a substitute for York as COVID-19 prevented me from being in York to study therefore I had to work remotely. I was also in charge of editing the piece together which I enjoyed and it gave me the ultimate creative control and let me learn new editing skills.

Hobby video for Instagram Stories.

I continued to work in a team to collaborate and make a video for Instagram story. This was an excellent expansion on my skills already learnt as this was for a different platform (Instagram/Mobile) so I had to be conscious about different ways of editing and filming to make this work. I filmed remotely in home, painting/drawing, I edited this together and I was also responsible for putting the finished video onto Instagram correctly and also including Instagram's functions (e.g. stickers and voting). I really enjoyed working with a different platform and this allowed me to expand and gain a new skillset.

Photography task.

Our group was tasked with creating a storyboard of images that tells a clear story through 15 images. This was an interesting task which I enjoyed working on as photography is a completely different skill set to videography and I am interested in both. This allowed me to expand my knowledge of photography, which I have a passion for. The task further helped me with working within a group, as I was able to have increased communication skills and organisation skills. COVID-19 meant that we all had to take our photos at different times and in different locations but it was our excellent cooperation and organisational skills that lead to our highly marked project.

Testimonials.

This task proved a challenge to complete during the COVID-19 epidemic, however my team was able to create a piece of work that was to a high standard. I worked to edit the piece of work together, along with filming GVs and my own (audio) testimonial. Although my testimonial was not used in the final product, it allowed me to gain valuable knowledge about how to film/record an interview/testimonial.

This task also helped me prepare for future work in the industry. As this task was designed to emulate what it would be like to work with a client and to create a piece of media that meets their standards whilst also incorporating their ideas.
